Review + Giveaway: Fanya in the Underworld by Jordan Elizabeth, Aaron Siddall (Illustrator)

Fanya in the Underworld

Synopsis

In an Alaska owned by Tsarist Russia, steamtech is melded with spirit magic to create a mighty machine. The elements are plentiful, but the Higher World crumbles and the local Inuit people are consumed.

When their father dies, the council denies Fanya her inheritance and sells her sister into slavery at the behest of the mysterious Zachary Finley. Fanya's quest to protect her sister and regain what's rightfully hers leads her from the Underworld of Stalgorod to the untamed wilds of greater Alaska.

It isn’t just Zachary Finley who wants Fanya to suffer. Frost Witches and Sea Hags have a thirst for her, and Saints have decided she’s perfect to become their tool.

Magic flows through Fanya and it is ready for her to battle against industry for the fate of enslaved souls.

Review

It's an amazing steampunk fantasy. I loved the story and as always Jordan Elizabeth's characters are truly remarkable. Fanya is a young woman, who lives in Alaska where steam-tech is combined with spirit magic. She is denied her inheritance and as she fights for what is rightfully hers, she stumbles upon a lot of other secrets. Now, she and her sister are both in danger and she must run away from the city in order to keep her sister safe. However, she has absolutely no intention of giving up on her inheritance.
Life outside the city is not what the two sisters had imagined. Soon they realize that many stories they have heard about the tribes and creatures that live outside are false. Things are not as they seem and Fanya might be the only one who can change them. But what will happen if she uses her magic and spirits are free? Will they make the world a better place or perhaps a worse?
One her quest Fanya finds her soul spirit. She discovered who she really is and how strong she can be when she believes in herself. She defeats the evil villains. Slay her dragons, so to speak, and at last, find what she has truly been looking for; a family and a home where she can live a carefree life. Also, she plans to keep helping others in whatever way she can.
It's a truly amazing story and when you combine it with a steampunk theme you get perfection. I loved how it flowed smoothly from the very beginning. There wasn't a single boring moment. In fact, once I started reading it I had a hard time putting it down. There were many twists and turns and some really unexpected consequences of Fanya's actions. All in all, it is an interesting, thrilling, dramatic, mysterious, and a little scary story which I think all readers can enjoy.
P.S. I received a complimentary copy of this book.

Excerpt:
After what seemed like hours in the sweltering van, it lurched to a stop.
Dianna heard a man bark orders. A door to the van opened and someone pulled the rope from her feet, then removed her hood. She took a deep breath.  A man grabbed her by the arm, forced to her feet, and pulled from the van. Dianna stumbled when she hit the ground. The stones were hot and her feet were covered by athletic socks, no shoes. Show no weakness.
Dianna immediately surveyed her surroundings. It was still night, but she was in a well-lit courtyard. A large stone mansion stood in front of her. She looked to her right, then her left. The courtyard was enclosed by a large stone fence, at least eight feet high. A fortress. Fortunately, Dianna was a rock-climber. She could rappel over the fence with the right equipment. All she would need was something to serve as a pick, maybe a rope. A knife, a screwdriver, even a fork. Keep your eyes and ears open. Be ready.
A large black man, dressed in a white suit and a maroon turban, walked out of the front door and down the stairs. He stopped and flashed a malevolent smile. He flung his arms wide and in a cultured baritone boomed, “Welcome to paradise, ladies. I hope you enjoy your stay.”
Some of the guards laughed.
“Crikey,” Tillie muttered. “Sounds like a blasted genie.”
Dianna glanced sideways and for the first time, got a look at her new friend. She was tall and thin, her body well defined. She looked strong and aware, almost fierce. Her eyes seemed to be studying the place, taking everything in. She showed no fear. Instead, she seemed interested. Something was off. Tillie did not act like a victim as the others did. She was not cowed. Was she a cop? Or like Dianna, someone who would not permit themselves to be broken?
There was only one thing of which Dianna was certain. She had found a friend. A useful one.

Review: Dare to Enter (The Crazy Rich Davenports #1) by Shannyn Leah & Kelly Moore

The F word flies free along with many other curse words. Feel free to get drunk (because the Davenports sure are!) while you’re reading it, and prepare to wet yourself laughing. If sex scenes are not your thing, this book might not be your thing. But, if you have a crazy sense of humor and like raunchy comedies - you’re in the right place. Join in on the craziness of The Crazy Rich Davenport Family.

Lucy’s husband Mark, died a year ago. Her life and her families has been steadily going downhill and things have gotten a little out of control, to say the least. When her daughter plans a birthday party for her half-sister. Lucy decides it’s time they all get their act together, but not everyone is on the same page.

There will be dildos and strawberries flying in the air, along with firecrackers, curse words, and little blue pills being slipped into drinks - hard-ons for everyone! Lucy’s hope for normal in her dysfunctional family will never happen and things only get worse when Mark’s snooty parents drop a bombshell that will only spark more insanity from The Crazy Rich Davenport family.

Hold on for the ride and laughter that ensues.
Review

This book is hilarious! I loved it, it's just so good. There are way too many laugh-out-loud moments to even count. All the characters are weird in their own unique way and the entire family is simply CRAZY. I assure you there is not a single boring moment in this book, but enter only if you dare. It might not be your cup of tea, after all, it was mine though. ;)

The story is told from five different points of views. Ford, Gemma, Lucy, Daisy, and Yaya. It might be a little confusing if you don't pay attention to which character is telling the story but otherwise, it flows perfectly. Davenports are a strange family. Lucy is still mourning her husband's death even after a year. Yaya (Lucy's mother) is trying to pick up the pieces in the best way she can. Unfortunately, the old woman is crazy and just ends up making everything worse. Ford is probably the sane one, Lucy's eldest son, but he is in love with a woman with multiple personalities. She is also the younger kids' nanny, Daisy. Gemma is Ford's sister, the sweet and kind one, unfortunately for her, she is a little naive and might need a rude awakening before this story ends.

Daisy has issues. Most days it's hard to tell which one of her various personalities will come out to play. There is Tommy, the zombie hunter and then there is Slutty Pepper, but they are not the only ones. There are more people she is hiding in her head and fears that one of them might make an appearance at the most inappropriate time. For now, these tow and Daisy herself are the only ones we have to deal with.

I think this is a great start to a series. I can only imagine how amazing this series will be with all the crazy characters that it has. I absolutely adored this book and would recommend it to all readers.
P.S. I received a complimentary copy of this book.

Review: What Were You Thinking, Paige Taylor? by Amanda Ashby

What Were You Thinking, Paige Taylor?
Synopsis
After her carefully ordered world imploded, Paige Taylor cracks up. On her tenth self-help book, it seemed like a good idea at the time to reinvent herself––move from Manhattan to the tiny beachside town of St. Clair––and take over the local bookstore.

But instead of discovering her spiritual Nirvana, she’s neck-deep in a floundering business, the locals treat her like a plague victim, and her mom’s suddenly decided to visit––with no end in sight––and keeps coming home with one surprise after the next.

Added to that pot of crazy, the one guy who sets her pulse racing has sworn off women forever. He’s got a Samsonite filled with baggage, but damn he looks good hauling it down the street. And giving her those sexy half-smiles. And tempting her to take him for a test ride.

Soon Paige discovers that reinventing herself takes more than just a change of address and a pithy quote on Instagram. She needs to face the truth about her life, and that’s something she can’t do alone.
Review
I loved it! It's such an adorable story with amazing characters and a small town setting. Paige's life is a mess. She is a people pleaser and needs to learn how to say 'no.' After a bad break-up, she really needs to start over. So she buys a bookshop in a small town and moves away. Everyone thinks that it is just a phase and she will get tired of small-town life soon enough. She doesn't agree. She likes it here. Finally, she has a few things in her life going well. She likes most of the people she meets but it seems that there are those who don't like her. Perhaps because she is an outsider. That's why is determined to fit in and be accepted by everyone around her. Liking Luke is a complication she really doesn't need right now.

Luke has his daughter to think about. He hasn't dated since his wife left them both because she got bored of their town. What if Paige does the same? Gets tired and moves back to her big city? No matter how much he tries to reason with himself though he still feels attracted to her. She is an amazing woman and maybe she will turn out to be different than other people. The only way to find out is to give themselves a chance... at happiness...

It's a really well-written story. It has its funny moments, romantic moments, and some very emotional ones too. I think it is definitely a must read for contemporary romance fans. You really don't want to miss Paige and Luke's story.
P.S. I received a complimentary copy of this book via NetGalley.

Review: Captivating the Earl by Callie Hutton

Captivating the Earl
Synopsis
Lady Elizabeth is hiding in the country as a governess, Miss Lizzie Moore. When handsome Lord Hawkins arrives at her employer’s house, she wants nothing to do with the roguish earl, even though her heart says otherwise.

Lord Hawkins is a rake of the highest order but when he is drawn to his cousin’s beautiful governess he must rein in his impulses. She can’t be his, though Hawk can’t stop thinking about her.

After an attempt on Lizzie’s life, Hawk learns who she really is. In defiance of orders from the Home Office to bring her in, he vows to protect her. Even though he’s not entirely sure she’s innocent, she is his responsibility. Lizzie doesn’t trust him but has grown to love him. When Hawk offers her the ultimate safeguard against nefarious scoundrels—his name—she refuses. She loves him, but fears she’s merely another one of his ’duties.’
Review
It is an absolutely amazing historical fiction novel. I loved everything about it, the story, the characters, the starting, and the ending. I think it's perfect in every way.

Lizzie has been hiding since her father disappeared. She fears that the ton would not accept daughter of a traitor and it seemed like the right thing to do. She has found a perfectly acceptable position as a governess and has been living comfortably... until Lord Hawkins arrives at his cousin's estate. She hopes that he doesn't recognize her but more importantly than that it seems that they both have a mutual attraction which cannot be ignored. She is a member of the staff and it is unseemly for Lord Hawkins to pay her so much attention. However, the real trouble starts when he receives a letter from the Home Office and suddenly it appears that Miss Lizzie's life is in grave danger.

Hawk cannot believe that Miss Lizzie is actually Lady Elizabeth, but something about her had intrigued him right from the moment he met her. Now it is up to him to keep her safe and he cannot trust anyone. Because there seems to be another traitor in their midst, one who wants her dead. They both flee and must uncover the truth before something really bad happens.

As the two spend more time together they begin to realize how much they love each other. If this ended well they might find something truly beautiful to cherish for the rest of their lives.

It's a must read a historical romance novel. I loved the story, it's well-written and has some amazing characters. I especially loved Lizzie and Hawk's characters. Their story was definitely worth reading for me.
P.S. I received a complimentary copy of this book via NetGalley.

Review: The First Rule of Hook-Ups by Nina Crespo

The First Rule of Hook-Ups
Synopsis
Someone once told me that there are worst things than being left at the altar. Well, not many, in my experience. That was six months ago, though, and my life has moved on. Heck, I have a new job lined up and I'm leaving town.

But, I can't deny that my love life kind of sucks.

That’s why I let my friends convince me to join them for Club Escapade’s Breakup Bash. And we might just be disillusioned enough to actually enjoy it. Last time we were here, it was for my bachelorette party. That night, I met one of the dancers – Raphael – and when he flirted with me, I almost forgot I was engaged. And there's a part of me that never forgot him.

Now, it seems my friends have wandered off and I’m thinking about calling it a night. Until the music begins and I see Raphael, my secret fantasy, on stage. And this time, I’m definitely not engaged...
Review
It's a really great read. I enjoyed the story, it's well-written, has well-developed characters and is quite fun to read. Alexa is moving away. After her fiance didn't show up at their wedding she has been having a rough time. So, it's time for a change. But before she leaves, her friends decide to have a girls night out. One thing leads to another and she ends hooking-up with a guy she has just met. Rafe owns the club and his business is all he is focused on right now. After a rough break up he doesn't need complications of a relationship in his life, especially, with some rich socialite who will end up breaking his heart. Good thing Alexa is on the same page but the chemistry between them is undeniable. Will they be able to keep things casual though? That's another question entirely.

Interesting, entertaining, and all in all a great story. It has the right amount of emotions, drama, romance, and fun. I'd definitely recommend it to romance fans.

But Alexa finds herself drawn to Marshall in ways she can’t quantify. Review
It's a great story, romantic, funny, and highly entertaining. Alexa is a single mother raising three sons. She hasn't been able to find love after her divorce and plans to do it now. That's the thing about her, she plans everything. She wants to control every aspect of her life and hates it when things don't go according to her plans. She is a hard worker and has a successful carrier, she is beautiful and by all accounts should be able to find a good guy. Unfortunately, that's not as easy as seems. As a final attempt, she decides to try online dating in a new way. She will arrange dates for twenty minutes and if she doesn't like that guy then no point in wasting any more time on him. But can you really know someone in twenty minutes?

Marshall owns a coffee shop. Alexa is his regular customer and now she wants to use his cafe for her experiment. He is so not ok with that, he likes her and hates the thought of her dating some other guy. Unfortunately. he can't do anything about it. She is all wrong for him, at least, that's what she thinks simply because he is a few years younger than her. Maybe he can convince her to give him a chance. But will a relationship between two people who are completely opposite work? Well, find out in this cute story.

I definitely recommend this to romance fans. It's a well-written story with great characters and some swoon-worthy scenes.

Review: The Earl and the Reluctant Lady (Lords of Vice #3) by Robyn DeHart

The Earl and the Reluctant Lady
Synopsis
Rakish playboy, Fletcher Banks, Earl of Wakefield has wanted Agnes Watkins since the first time he saw her. But her older brother is his direct supervisor and makes it very clear that Agnes is off limits. Fletcher does his best to forget her and instead focuses on his spying assignments that have him seducing women for needed information.
But when Agnes corners him at a ball and proclaims she’s going to reform his scoundrel ways, Fletcher knows he can ignore her no longer. Initially he considers this an opportunity to rid himself of his fascination with her. But the more time he spends with her, the more he realizes that what he feels for her isn’t a passing infatuation, but real love. He uses her goal as an excuse to pursue her full throttle despite warning glances from her brother. But can he convince her that he’s mended his scandalous ways?
Review

This is an adorable story. I loved both Fletcher and Agnes. Their interactions with each other are so sweet and interesting. I really enjoyed reading this historical fiction and would recommend it to all romance lovers.
Agnes has lived in her mother's shadow all her life. Finally, she gives up on love and romance. She can afford to stay single forever. Her brother supports her decision and thus she is safely off the marriage market. Now she can do what she enjoys to do. That's how she becomes part of a Ladies' group helping people of London. However, things are not as simple as they seem and her life might be in danger. She also finds it very difficult to ignore Lord Fletcher's. She has no idea why but for some reason she enjoys his company and maybe even feel lust towards him.
Fletcher likes Agnes but she is off-limits. There is no way he will jeopardize his carrier and her reputation just because he can't keep his hands to himself. That's also why he avoids her. But now that's not an option. He has to protect her and that means staying close to her. Will he be able to protect her without compromising her or maybe he will end up convincing her to marry him? But is that even a possibility for the two of them?
It's a well-written story. I find it to be a light-hearted romance which I think everyone can enjoy reading. I definitely did!
P.S. I received a complimentary copy of this book via NetGalley.
