The Russian Mob, in case you need a label.
The instant I laid eyes on Ruby, drugged and strapped to a bed, every inch of me swore to protect her from that day forward, even from myself. She needs to know, needs to feel, what it’s like to belong to me. She will hate me for what comes next but it’s inevitable as I hunt down the one responsible for her kidnapping, and putting her in danger.

Review: The Pursuit of Mrs. Pennyworth by Callie Hutton

Synopsis
From USA Today Bestselling Author Callie Hutton is a new captivating and suspenseful historical romance...

Recently widowed, Charlotte Pennyworth is relishing her independence and it rankles to have to rely on a man to help her with an increasingly sinister stalker. Former Yardman, Elliot Baker, is reluctant to take on Charlotte’s case but despite himself and his history with another woman, he is drawn to the bright, attractive widow.

Sparks smolder between the PI and his client but neither is looking to form an attachment. Elliot thinks Charlotte is hiding something. Charlotte has no desire to marry again, especially to a private investigator, no matter how handsome, brave and kind he is. The risk to his life and her heart is too great. But more dangerous than a menacing stalker is secrets and when Charlotte’s come to light, even the passion between them might not douse the flames of Elliot’s distrust.
Review

Unfortunately, this book isn't as good as I thought it'd be. At least, for me it's an average read, something you take your time with and maybe then it won't get boring in the middle. I'm the kind of reader who mostly read books in one sitting, so I prefer fast paced reads, which will keep me entertained for a few hours. This is not one of those books. Although, story is good and both main characters are well-written, however, it is really slow. Nothing much seems to happen for a while at times. I'll be honest I skipped few chapters after 50%. It picked up again at the end, ending is good. Overall, as I said, it's an average read for me.

Charlotte's life hasn't been easy and just when she thinks it will get better it actually gets worse. She has no idea who is after her but she is sure someone out there doesn't want her to live a quite peaceful life. After few dead animals are left on her doorstep she decides to hire an investigator. Hopefully he will be able to catch the perpetrator and then she can deal with it.

Mr. Baker seems like a very professional person. He also thinks of himself as one, but apparently Charlotte is going to test his believes. Soon he realizes that being professional around her is not something he is capable of. First, they must solve the mystery behind all the 'gifts' she has been receiving and after that they can think about their future, hopefully together...

The mystery side of the book is quite good. It kept me intrigued and ending is completely unexpected so I loved that part. If you like slow-paced historical fiction then this is a book you'd definitely enjoy.

The shock on Scarlet’s face, the disbelief and grief, made him wish he’d kept his mouth shut. The last thing he wanted was to inflict her with the same hell he was going through. He turned away from her, pushing her hand from his arm. “Go home, Scarlet.” “I’m not going anywhere.” She grabbed his arm again, preventing him from picking up the axe, the tool he’d used to keep himself from reaching for a bottle. “I won’t leave you alone.” Ignoring the sweat and dirt, she wrapped her arms around his waist and held him tightly, resting her head against his chest. His body stirred to life at her touch, disgusting him. His world was crumbling around him and all he could think was that he wanted to bury himself inside her until she screamed his name. “Go,” he said roughly. If she was smart, she’d run away and never look back. He was a bad-tempered, recovering alcoholic with nothing to offer her. He wasn’t worth the risk. She looked up at him, her blue eyes clear and steady. “No. I won’t leave you.” He pushed her up against the wall of the workshop, not sure if he was trying scare her away or make her stay. “I don’t want to hurt you.” She shook her head. “You won’t.” Cam closed his eyes and groaned. He wrapped his arms around her in a vice-like grip, unable to resist her any longer. God, he needed her. He lowered his head and kissed her. There was no subtlety in the kiss, no gentleness or finesse. Only passion and raw need. But she stayed with him, returning his passion, giving solace. He greedily lapped it up, taking everything she had to give. But he wanted, needed more. He lifted her and she wrapped her long, slender legs around his waist. He buried his face against her soft, sweet-smelling neck, inhaling her clean, floral scent. At the same time, he snaked his hand up her thigh and began to pull down her panties. “Tell me to stop,” he rasped. “Tell me now while I still can.”

Love is worth the risk…
When their grandfather dies, the Lindquist sisters, Harper, Scarlet and Maggie, inherit the northern Minnesota fishing lodge that had been in their family for three generations. The inheritance is bittersweet. They were raised at the lodge by their grandparents. The natural beauty of the place hasn’t changed, but the building itself is crumbling and desperately in need of repair. The lodge also reminds them of what they lost. Twenty-two years previously, their parents died there in what was ruled a murder/suicide.
As the sisters struggle to breathe new life into the failing lodge, old fears and questions rise to the surface even as new love presents itself. Why did their father murder their mother? What truths did their grandparents keep from them? The sisters must fight to keep the wounds of the past from putting their futures, and their fledgling relationships, in jeopardy.

She writes contemporary romance, romantic suspense, and historical romance set in World War Two, in lengths ranging from short story to full length novel. Excerpt:
Jack cocked his head to the side. “You sure you won’t stay beyond the summer?”
Meg shook her head. They’d been over this ground before. “You know I need to get back to New York. I need to get on with my life.”
“Sorry I’m such a drag on you.” He gave her a wicked smile. “And you always say my age doesn’t matter.”
“Fifty-one doesn’t make you ancient.”
“I have my days,” Jack said, flipping over a card. “But I know what we have is transitory. Don’t worry about me getting carried away.” He smirked. “But you have been a breath of fresh air for me.”
“Cripes, the way you hang out around poker tables, anyone would provide a breath of fresh air.” Meg smiled and purposely softened her tone. “And you’ve been very good for me, too. I don’t know how I would’ve made it through the hectic pace of the last six months without your steady influence. You’ve always been there, and with few demands.”
“Perhaps,” Jack began wistfully, “I should’ve been more demanding.” He must’ve seen her nostrils flare, because he lifted a hand, forestalling her response. “You’ve renewed my faith in life.” He grinned devilishly. “Even in love.”

Cover Reveal: Under a Storm-Swept Sky by Beth Anne Miller

About the book:

An eighty-mile trek across the rugged, stunning beauty of Scotland’s Isle of Skye isn't something I imagined myself doing. Ever. This isn't a trail for beginners. And I'm not a hiker.

But I have to finish it, even if it kills me. I have no choice.

With the ever-changing weather and relentless terrain, I’m in over my head.

Rory Sutherland, my guide on this adventure, is not happy. We clash with every mile, but we recognize a shared pain. Not only is the journey a struggle, but the tension between us is taut with unsaid words. And hope.

He’s broken. I’m damaged. Together, we’re about to make the perfect storm.

Praise for Under a Storm-Swept Sky:

“Beth Anne Miller hits it out of the park with Under a Storm-Swept Sky. Beautifully evocative and romantic, you feel as if you are right there with Rory and Amelia as they hike the treacherous countryside of Skye on a journey of discovery and love.” – Monica McCarty, New York Times & USA Today bestselling author of Going Dark

"Beautifully evocative and romantic." - NYT bestseller, Monica McCarty

"It's impossible not to get swept away by this heart-pounding read.” —Kelly Siskind, author of Stud

About Beth Anne Miller:

Beth Anne Miller has a fascination for all things Scottish (including, but not limited to, men in kilts), which has influenced all her writing to date. Her first novel is a time travel called INTO THE SCOTTISH MIST; her second, A STAR TO STEER HER BY, has a Scottish hero; and her newest book, UNDER A STORM-SWEPT SKY, is set on the Isle of Skye, and was inspired by her own long-distance treks in Scotland. A native New Yorker, Beth Anne lives on Long Island and works in the publishing industry. She’s looking forward to her next trip to Scotland.

Review + Excerpt + Giveaway: The Backup Plan by Jen McLaughlin

The Backup Plan
Synopsis
I’m beyond help...

I threw a football before I could walk. Everything in my life revolved around football–and I loved every second. I was a star. Until, suddenly...I wasn’t. Now everyone thinks I’m the monster who killed his best friend. I’m an outcast on campus, silent and alone. Then Taylor Selmer walks back into my life. When will she learn–I’m beyond saving.

I need to save him...

Chase and I used to be friends. But after the accident, nothing was the same. We used to have something special–until we didn’t. But he doesn’t smile anymore. Doesn’t talk. Doesn’t play. It hurts me to see him this way, and I will do everything I can to get him back in the game. Whether he likes it or not.

Review
It wasn't exactly the lighthearted romance I was hoping for, but it was just as great. I loved the story, although at times it was quite depressing (especially in the beginning). Chase's life was a mess, he was failing his classes, his social life was non-existent, and above all he was hated by many people. College was no fun for him until Taylor arrived. Suddenly both of them started hanging with each other, studying together, and soon realizing that they want more than just being friends, if they were even that...

It's an interesting and well-written story. I enjoyed both Chase and Taylor's characters. They both seemed perfect together. I think, it's a perfect mix of angst and romance. I quite enjoyed reading it and would recommend to those who like contemporary fiction.

Excerpt from THE BACKUP PLAN

The door opened...making me fall backward into Chase’s pitch-black room. When I landed against something hard and naked, arms closed around me without hesitation.
A palm brushed my right breast, sending a wave of awareness shooting through me. I tried not to think about that, though.
Guys were nothing but trouble.
I had bigger plans than falling for a smooth talker with bright eyes and a fake smile who would do nothing but distract me. Once I managed to regain my balance, I spun on my heel and looked at him.
The room behind him was dark, but the hallway illuminated his hotness. And once it did? I wished I hadn’t looked at all.
He stood in the doorway, looking completely unfazed by the fact that he’d basically just felt me up, and glowered at the guy in the hallway. He was shirtless, and wearing nothing but a pair of black sweats. His chest was hard and chiseled, and his abs...yeah. I wasn’t gonna touch upon those for the sake of my own sanity.
Waxing poetic over his abs wasn’t part of my job description.
“Uh, hey...” the guy in the hallway said, trailing off after a feeble attempt at pretending he hadn’t been talking crap about him moments before.
Chase’s green eyes met mine before focusing on the guy in the hall again. His sharp cheekbones were the same as I remembered, and so was his short brown hair. He used to have dimples in his cheeks when he smiled, which had softened the harsh lines of his face and given him a softer appeal, but I had no idea if they still existed since he hadn’t smiled at me yet. Or...at anyone all day. Had he forgotten how?
He said nothing. Just stared the other guy down.
Even I had to admit his stony silence was impressive.
Of course, he kind of reminded me of his dad right now, something he probably wouldn’t like. Or would he? I had no clue.
“I didn’t mean to...” The guy backed up, his face pale, and looked back at me. “She a friend of yours?”
Chase didn’t answer him. He just motioned me inside, his jaw ticking ever so slightly. When I didn’t move fast enough, he shot me a look with those gorgeous eyes of his, and I jumped slightly. “Um. Yes, I am.” I swallowed hard and inched past him, making sure I didn’t brush against his bare chest in the process.
Chase slammed the door behind me. I blinked across the inky blackness of the room, my heart hammering away in my ears. He’d been sitting here in the dark this early in the night? Had he been napping before hitting the books?
I’d learned college kids napped more than one year olds—and much more enthusiastically.
“Do you have something against lights?” I asked, forcing a little laugh at the end.
Dead silence met my joke. In all fairness, it was a pretty lame attempt. For a second I wondered if he was even in the room with me, but I heard him breathe. I turned my head, trying to figure out where he was. To my left, maybe.
“Okay. No lights, then. That’s fine. It’s cool. I’m not scared of the dark.” I paused. “Were you taking a power nap? I could use one. I got an hour of sleep last night.”
Still nothing.
I sensed him there, right next to me. He wasn’t touching me, but I swore he was thinking about it or something.
That makes no sense, Taylor.
I shivered, anxious and excited, all at the same time. “I don’t know if you remember me, but I’m—”
Without warning, Chase moved close enough for me to feel his heat. I backed against the wall until I couldn’t back up anymore. It wasn’t that he scared me. He didn’t. I just...
I just backed up, okay?

“You’re Taylor Selmer. Of course, I remember you. Why are you in my room?”

Review: The Angel Trials by Michelle Madow

The Angel Trials (Dark World: The Angel Trials #1)
Synopsis

She thought magic didn’t exist. She was so, so wrong.

Raven Danvers is a typical college student… until she’s attacked by a demon on the night of her twenty-first birthday. Luckily, she’s saved by Noah—a mysterious, sexy wolf shifter who appears and disappears in the blink of an eye.

When Raven returns home, she discovers her mom has been abducted by the same demon who came after her. And who turns up at the scene of the crime again? Noah. He’s hunting the demons who are taking humans, and he’s ultimately heading to the place where Raven needs to go to save her mom—the mystical island of Avalon.

Now Raven’s tagging along on Noah’s demon hunting mission whether he wants her there or not. And he makes it no secret that his journey would be a lot easier without her dragging him down. But Raven isn’t going anywhere, so she and Noah will have to learn to work together—if they don’t kill each other first.

Review

I can feel this is going to be an amazing series. I absolutely loved this book. It's an amazing adventurous paranormal read. Raven is about to find out that shifters, vampires, witches, and even demons do exist. They are roaming the earth along humans without being discovered. But Raven's life is going to change drastically, because of these supernatural beings. She will face many challenges in order to find out the truth about her mother's kidnapping. It won't be easy but she is willing to give it her best shot.

Noah never thought he'd have to take a human with him while hunting demons, but here they are. Raven is tagging along and he is going to help her because ultimately helping her means helping himself, in fact it's helping all of humanity. It is important to stop these demons at any cost. If they want Raven for some reason then he is going to find out what that reason is, until then they are going to complete his own mission. It will be dangerous but it cannot be helped. So, now it's not just Sage and him, Raven will also be part of their adventure...

It's a very well-written novel. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it, in fact it was difficult to put down once I started and read the whole book in one sitting. I'd definitely recommend it to paranormal fans.

P.S. I received a complimentary copy of this book for which I'd like to tank the author.

Review: Rogue Crystal by Jordan Elizabeth Mierek

Synopsis
Avery loves the prospect of visiting Scarya with her cousin and boyfriend. Adventure and romance surely await in this exotic country. Instead, war breaks out, and Avery ends up with an ancient sword everyone is dying to possess.

Scarya isn’t just a foreign land – the more time Avery is trapped there, the more she learns about her past. Her ancestors originated in Scarya, and one of them brought an enchanted crystal with him to Scarya from space. She never expected an alien to ruin her vacation, but sometimes the past has a way of reappearing.
Review

It's an interesting tale of chaos, when past collides into present while shaping into the future. The story is quite well-written and intriguing. From the very beginning it engages readers' full attention. I enjoyed reading it, it's mixed genre book so hard to put it in one category. But I guess if you're a fantasy fan then this book is definitely a must read. Anyone with good imagination will enjoy it, as I did.

Story revolves around a crystal that comes from another planet. It has powers which humans cannot understand, but there are those on Earth who know about it's origin because they have followed it here. And now they are simply not willing to leave without it. Then there are those who will do anything to protect it. They know that protecting the crystal is their only reason to live. And among all this Avery finds herself; scared, confused, and unwilling to trust anyone other than her childhood friend and now her boyfriend. But is he really who he says he is?

Things are not always as they seems but sometimes they have a way of working themselves out. Avery hopes that this true in this case as well because she simply cannot fathom a world where Jessamine is not safe. She must keep her safe and well protected. Will she be able to do that or will the curse of the crystal destroy them all?

I always enjoy Jordan Elizabeth Mierek's books. Her plots are usually so far fetched and unique, and she has a way of weaving a tale that grasps your attention and refuses to let go. Simply amazing! It's always a pleasure to read her books and I keep looking forward to more from her.
