Review: Imperfect Strangers by David Staniforth

Imperfect Strangers

How well do you know the people you see every day?

Sally hardly knows Keith. They're practically strangers until the day she smiles at him.

Would you smile so readily if you risked losing your friends?
Would you smile so readily if you risked losing your life?

Unfortunately, you can’t begin to know a person until you let them in.

Imperfect Strangers: A psychological thriller that simmers to a dark and dramatic climax.

4-Stars Review

This was an interesting read. I usually like psychological thrillers and I liked this one too. But it is different from other books in some ways. First of all I loved the details about characters, which give so much insight into the way they act & secondly the way author developed his characters is outstanding. I love reading books, truthfully its rare for me to dislike a book but sometimes authors really impress me. This is one of them. I will surely be looking for more books by David Staniforth.

The book is written in an interesting way. It builds up slowly but climax is no less thrilling. Keith is a socially inept person who has no idea how to interact with people. Sally works at the same place where Keith is a night guard. He wants to be romantically involved with her. He tries to woo her in his own way but clearly they are not working. At many times I felt sorry for Keith with the kind of mother he had no wonder he had such serious issues. The scenes where he thinks about his mother are truly sad. People didn't make things any better for this socially-awkward-somewhat-pathetic-soul. This book will make you question a lot of things from your day to day life. As with most good thrillers the end does leave one wanting for more. Just reading the synopsis I knew I'd love it and I was not wrong at all. A must read for lovers of psychological thrillers!

While backpacking through Florence, Italy, during the summer before she heads off to college, Lucy Sommersworth finds herself falling in love with the culture, the architecture, the food...and Jesse Palladino, a handsome street musician. After a whirlwind romance, Lucy returns home, determined to move on from her "vacation flirtation." But just because summer is over doesn't mean Lucy and Jesse are over, too.

In this coming-of-age romance, April Lindner perfectly captures the highs and lows of a summer love that might just be meant to last beyond the season.

About April Lindner

April Lindner is the author of three novels: Catherine, a modernization of Wuthering Heights; Jane, an update of Jane Eyre; and Love, Lucy, releasing January 27, 2015. She also has published two poetry collections, Skin and This Bed Our Bodies Shaped. She plays acoustic guitar badly, sees more rock concerts than she’d care to admit, travels whenever she can, cooks Italian food, and lavishes attention on her pets—two Labrador retriever mixes and two excitable guinea pigs. A professor of English at Saint Joseph’s University, April lives in Pennsylvania with her husband and two sons.

The Guest Post

Like Lucy Sommersworth, the heroine of Love, Lucy, my parents gave me the gift of a lifetime: a backpacking trip to Europe. I was a bit older than Lucy—22, and just out of college—but when I arrived in Milan, Italy with a Eurail pass, a copy of Let’s Go: Europe, and a seventy-pound backpack I could barely lift, I was a wee bit terrified. Like Lucy, I spoke only a little bit of Italian, just barely enough to get by, and I wasn’t particularly good at reading maps or train schedules. Unlike Lucy, I was travelling solo.

Luckily, my journey began with training wheels. I’d just taken a college Italian class, and my professor had offered a safe crash pad for the first few days of my trip—in her family home in the Alps. Less luckily, when I reached Malpensa airport, nobody was there to pick me up. Giddy with excitement and jet lag, I wandered around the airport, eavesdropping on Italians as they hugged each other hello and goodbye, and had noisy arguments. I’d never felt more alone in my life. Where would I sleep that night if my ride didn’t show up?

Luckily, my professor’s brother arrived at last to whisk me away to the family home in Domodossola. The extended family welcomed and fed me, gave me tours of their city with its charming medieval center, helped me practice my Italian, and, when the time was right, brought me to the train station where my solo travels began for real. It was time to take off the training wheels.

If I’d felt alone back in the airport, I was even more so on that train to Verona, a city where I didn’t know a soul. In those pre-internet days, I could disappear into thin air and nobody would even notice I was gone. The thought was chilling, but oddly exciting.

By nightfall, I’d made it to Verona. I’d figured out the public transportation, found a youth hostel, and booked myself a bed. Best of all, I had introduced myself to a handful of other backpackers. We hung out together in the hostel’s common area, sharing bread and cheese, exchanging stories, discussing the rules of the road—those bits of practical wisdom our travels were teaching us. Here are a few.

Time passes differently on the road.  Spend a few very intense hours seeing the sites with strangers and by the end of the day, those strangers have become a part of your story. Years later you’ll see their faces in your photo album and still remember stray details of the adventures you shared together, even if you can’t quite recall their names.

Spontaneity is key.  There are few things as magical as showing up at a train station with no idea where you’re headed next, picking a random train, and hopping on.

Janis Joplin said it best: Freedom’s just another word for nothing left to lose.  When you’re carrying all your possessions on your back in a city where you don’t know a soul, you’re absolutely free. You can go anywhere, do anything. That freedom has its lonely moments—but it can be the doorway to all kinds of adventures.

Embrace misadventure.  As carefully as you plan there will be crazy mistakes: wrong turns, slept-through train stops, multilingual misunderstandings, and all kinds of other blunders—and these will make the best stories. My misadventures are some of my favorite memories. The time I missed curfew and had to climb into my hostel through a second-story window. The morning when, hanging out my recently washed clothes to dry, I dropped my wet underthings out the window, onto a stranger’s head. The night when, with no room to stay in, I slept on Venice’s train station steps with about a hundred other backpackers, the stars above us and the Grand Canal stretched out before us.

Would I trade that last memory for a safe, comfy night in an actual bed?  Not on your life.

There is a blast-wide giveaway, ending February 6th at 11:59 p.m. Pacific, for:

Review: Pretty Smart Girls by Shae Ross

Pretty Smart Girls (Entangled Embrace)

Team Ryan
Ryan Rose and her fellow Spartans are finalists in a high-profile entrepreneurial competition. They're competing for life-changing money and for their futures. They have a solid plan to win. All they need to do is trounce the competition: rich frat boys from an archrival university. Easy, right?

Team Jett
Jett Trebuchet's first mistake was not realizing that Ryan and her friends were the competition. His second was expressing his unabashed confidence in his team’s ability to win. After all, everyone knows the only thing MSU does better than U of M is produce beautiful, easy women…oh, and he almost forgot to say “dumb.” And boy, does his team pay forthat one.

Game On
As each side tries to game the other, something else seems to be getting in the way—attraction. Now Ryan and Jett must keep their teams from getting distracted by the opposite sex...and each other. All is not fair in love and war when it comes to winning this game.

4-Stars Review

The story is about two teams, one competition. Ryan and her friends have entered into a corporate competition which will earn them much needed money and also a contract with the firm hosting it. Three girls really need to win this competition. They are all brilliant and more than deserve this chance.

Jett and his friends have also entered into the competition. All three guys come from rich families and apparently do not need to win this competition. At least that is what the girls thought when they first met them. Similarly guys also made some presumptions about their rivals. Things started badly and then the rivalry between both teams kept increasing especially because Ryan and Jett were taking things pretty personally.

Both were attracted to each other as well. It was very difficult for them to not act upon this attraction. There are some LOL moments in the book and some very irritating scenes between Ryan and Jett. Sometimes both acted like children rather than grown people. But all in all it was an interesting read. i will recommend it to all romance lovers, especially people who love romance between nemesis/rivals.

Review: Ghost of a Promise by Kelly Moran

Ghost of a Promise (Phantoms #1)

It might be love…but will they survive the night?

The ghosts of her family's estate on the coast of Maine never troubled Ava Trumble. When she finally inherits the historic mansion, however, there's a small string attached: Ava has exactly one year to solve a 200-year-old mystery of a missing girl, or lose her family's home...

The lead investigator for paranormal TV show Phantoms, Jackson Granger, is prepared for any metaphysical encounter—until now. It's not just the uncanny sense of "coming home" or even his reaction to the fiery redhead who seems to consume his every waking thought. No, it's that the ghosts are using Jackson and Ava's attraction to play out a centuries-old tragedy. Heartbreak. Loss. Overwhelming passion. Now Jackson and Ava must determine if they're sharing something real...or if they've been possessed by a love that never died.

5-Stars Review

An amazing book. Very well written and full of suspense, intrigue, thrill, romance and lots of metaphysical activity. There are two love stories. One tragic between a couple who lived a long time ago. Their ghosts still haunt Ava's family home. another between Ava and Jackson. Both are tied to each other through their past and soon they will find out that they cannot run away fro their destiny.

Ava finds out that she can lose her inheritance if she didn't solve the mystery behind Sarah Kerricks disappearance. Now she is desperate and if it means she has to let "ghost busters" into her house then so be it. Although the team behind the show "Phantom" seems very real. They are not a bunch of eccentrics looking for cheap thrills. And they think that her house is definitely haunted. They must find out who is haunting the house and why. Then maybe the mystery of Sarah's disappearance will be solved for once and for all.

What Ava didn't count on was Jackson being a distant relation of Sarah's family. The moment he enters the house it seems as if the house itself knows and want him out of there. Sarah was after all from a family which betrayed Ava's ancestors. So it seems as if house remembers.....
This is a book for all paranormal lovers. I enjoyed reading it. And I hope you do too...

Review: Love Potions (Warlocks MacGregor #1) by Michelle M. Pillow

Love Potions (Warlocks MacGregor, #1)

A little magickal mischief never hurt anyone...

Erik MacGregor, from a clan of ancient Scottish warlocks, isn't looking for love. After centuries, it's not even a consideration...until he moves in next door to Lydia Barratt. It's clear that the shy beauty wants nothing to do with him, but he's drawn to her nonetheless and determined to win her over.

Lydia Barratt just wants to be left alone to grow flowers and make lotions in her old Victorian house. The last thing she needs is a demanding Scottish man meddling in her private life. Just because he's gorgeous and totally rocks a kilt doesn't mean she's going to fall for his seductive manner.

But Erik won't give up and just as Lydia let's her guard down, his sister decides to get involved. Her little love potion prank goes terribly wrong, making Lydia the target of his sudden embarrassingly obsessive behavior. They'll have to find a way to pull Erik out of the spell fast when it becomes clear that Lydia has more than a lovesick warlock to worry about. Evil lurks within the shadows and it plans to use Lydia, alive or dead, to take out Erik and his clan for good.

5-Stars Review
After a very long time I have read a book which made me laugh so much. I absolutely loved this magick- romance-mischief. It is hilarious not to mention full of sizzling romance between a warlock and his "inthrall". Not that Lydia is aware or the magick around her. Her grandmother had always been called a "witch" but she has never believed in real magick. She knows a thing or two about potions though. Love Potions is her business and in her small town she is living a peaceful life. She doesn't date.

Then watlocks came to town. Erik is the eldest son and he arives before his big family to make sure that there were no problems with the house and people around town. After all it is not easy to hide magick from people and there are protective spells that are needed so that ordinary people don't detect magickal activity. MacGregor are bunch of hunderds-something year olds. Yet the siblings and cousins like to play magick tricks on each other. Sometimes thing do get out of hands though....

Lydia and Erik had an instant conection. The chemistery between the two is potent. Then Erik realises that she is his "onthrall" and is actually sucking his magick from him. Lydia doesn't realise it and unintentionally used his magick and freaked out. then her granmother's ghosts come to her rescue or maybe she just came to annoy her. In any case this leds her to believe in supernatural and makes things a little easier for Erik to explain.

But what a good story without a good villain? right? So there are some dark forces around Lydia who want to use her to get to erik's magick. If they success Lydia and Erik can both end uo dead. Things get a little intense in the middle but by the time book ends you'd be laughing once again. It is must read for all book lovers and for those who enjoy a good romantic comedy with a paranormal twist.

Blog Tour: Broken Prophecy (Broken Wings Book 3) by Sandra Love

Title: Broken Prophecy (Broken Wings Book 3)
Author: Sandra Love
Release Date: December 18th
Blog Tour: January 19th-23rd
Genre: YA Paranormal

] Cordelia is dark, but is that her fate? She's also the one the prophecy talks about, and she has a lot of decisions to make. Can she fulfill the prophecy, even if it means the death of a loved one? Between the love of her life, her best friend, and her birth father, she has a ton of support. But is that enough to help her make the difficult decision she has to make? Can she fulfill the prophecy, become pure once again, and save the world? That's a lot of pressure on one eighteen year old girl's shoulders.

Chapter One
The burning is too much for me. I don’t think I can do this anymore. It feels like my veins are on ablaze, and that fire ants are eating at my skin. I just want to die. I hate what Amelia has done to me. I don’t know why she turned me dark rather than just killing me. I don’t know where to go or what to do. The look on Cameron’s face killed me, and I know I can fight this. I have to; my country needs me. I don’t know what the prophecy states, but I need to get hold of it so I know what I have to do. I know I have to kill my parents, but there is no way in hell I am killing my father. Now, when it comes to my mother, I think I can do it, because she made me this way.
I stand on the edge of the cliff and look down at the waves crashing along the rocks. Now I need to think about what I am going to do. I know I need to go into hiding until things chill out. I don’t want to hurt anyone, or worse, kill someone. I am not an evil person, nor am I like my horrible mother. Maybe I could hide out in Summers, Georgia in that cabin. Yes, that’s what I will do. Lock myself away until Cameron finds me.
Thinking of Cameron makes me sad. Sitting up against a nearby tree, I remember the look on his face when he realized I was dark. It ripped my heart in half to know that the boy I love had to witness that. That I know I saw a look of fear in his eyes over what I had become. What did I do to piss off the Gods? I sit there listening to the waves and watching the clouds speed in the sky. I look up to the moon that still has a hint of red. Damn you, blood moon. I freaking hate it, as it was a part of this as well.
The sound of the waves make me drowsy, so I began to close my eyes.  But when I hear people talking in the distance, I open them back up and stand to hide behind the tree. I can tell they were coming my way.

What Happened before Broken Prophecy.

Cordelia Rose has a horrible life. She gets bullied by students at school, beaten by her father, practically abandoned by her mother, and wants to end her life and suffering. But when some strange things start to happen, she questions whether or not she has a purpose in this life.

Then she meets a brother and sister that means more to her than she realizes. They are her protectors, and her kindred spirits. Just like her, they are bruised and broken, though for different reasons.

When she finally discovers the truth of her existence, her mind is jumbled with everything She has to take in; not to mention the battle she has to fight inside and out.

Broken Hearts: Kaleigh’s Revenge

Kaleigh had her heart broken.
And now she wants revenge.
But that's hard amongst the battle
raging around her in
her home city of Ithaca.

Add to that the fact that she's a fallen angel
with a curse, and you've pretty much got the worst
time of her life....

But her new friend, Gabe,
may just make it the best time, too.

Review: The Marriage Match (Suddenly Smitten #3) by Tracy March

The Marriage Match

Hot bachelor seeks bride…

Resort tycoon Trent Hawthorne is looking for a wife. His all-business, no-nonsense grandmother (and the matriarch of the small town of Maple Creek) has selected three potential brides―all beautiful and approved. Each “fantasy date” will take place in a lush Caribbean setting, filmed like a reality show to promote the Hawthorne family’s chain of resorts. All of Trent's hopes for love combined with a clever marketing gimmick…what could possibly go wrong?

As it turns out, all it takes is a kiss. A sizzling, sweet-as-sin kiss. But Cynthia Sawyer isn't one of the bachelorettes, and she's definitely not supposed to be making out with her boss's sexy grandson. Not to mention it's strictly against company policy. But Cynthia has her own reasons for hooking Trent up with a bride who isn’t her as soon as possible. And losing her heart is a price that she's willing to pay…

5-Stars Review

I absolutely loved this romance novel. It is too good. It made me all starry-eyed. It is awe-inspiring and what not?! Seriously I think this is a must, must read for all romance lovers out there. You will enjoy this one for sure. It didn't started as well as one would hope but with every sentence this book just kept getting better and better and by the end I was hoping it'd never end.

Cyn is down to earth, loving and kind girl. She grew up under lots of rules and restrictions and ended up rebelling against her parents. But soon she learnt her lesson and now her relationship with her parents is on the mend. She has a good job. She likes her work. although her employer "the Queen" can be overbearing and demanding at times. But its nothing she can't take. until one day when the Queen asked her to make her grandson fall in love with one of the three girls she hand picked for him.

Trent is looking for a wife and he is not really against his grandmother's elaborate scheme of finding a perfect match for him. Then he spent time with Cyn and somehow ended up falling for her... But she is not one of the girls his grandmother picked. There are a lot of complications and they might not be able to overcome them. In the end they did. but its the journey they had which is worth reading about.
So happy reading!

A bit about me...

I've been hooked on books since I was a kid but it got worse in my twenties, when I discovered romances--the hotter, the better. Growing up in Southern California, with lots of surfer manliness surrounded me, was certainly a good boost for reading about delicious alpha guys and the women who adore them. When I learned I had a knack for telling these stories too, I guess you could say I was doomed--though my path toward romance novelist took a few detours via a concert-reviewing gig for my college newspaper (free show tickets...backstage passes...that was a no-brainer), artist interviews for a Beverly Hills dance music mag, personal assistant work for a record producer, dance club disc jockey, and a lot of fun in the hospitality industry.

These days, I still live in California, and have found an amazing alpha guy of my own who was brave enough to marry me. We live on a street that looks like Brigadoon, with our beautiful daughter. I have the best life ever, and never forget to thank the Big Guy Upstairs for it, either.
